I'm not sure I understand why medical are so secretive to begin with. I think the whole idea has made us afraid of digital health care. What do medical records really contain? Our weight? Heaven forbid someone should know your really weight. All personal information is the same, where it’s banking or taxes, and it all requires the same level of security. Clearly we have proved that the internet is safe enough to store our tax and bank information, why not medical? Digital anything is easier to manage and easier to maintain. As long as everyone is one is using the same or compatible systems.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ryan, I'm not sure why people feel they have to hide everything that deals with their medical records. We already do banking online, so medical records should be okay. If someone trusts their money online then how is medical records such a big deal. The way digital technology has been advancing and how quickly, it was only a matter of time before hospital would use them for records. I think it is a good idea because everything can be organized a lot easier and all in one place.
ReplyDeleteYou just need to look at the credit card industry to see how digital technology can safeguard personal health information. Retailers have regularly ‘lost’ consumer’s credit card information in digital form. There are advantages to keeping the record in digital form, but security isn’t high on that list. They would be stored in databases, which tend to be large. If accessed the offenders would have access to a large amount of information.
ReplyDeleteWell this is definitely a more efficient and convenient form of storage but most people feel that an individuals health issues should be kept private. Hence the HIPPA guidelines set forth currently but how will digitizing these records affect us as a society. I personally don’t think it’s a big deal but what if an AIDS carrier wishes not to disclose that type of information for fear of being discriminated. I think that no matter what new technology is developed we should still keep up with the protection of that same information whether if the records be hand written or digitally stored
ReplyDeleteBy my understanding, there are some people who truly fear an identity theft case. But I understand where everyone's coming from. I don't see the need for the fear and why people waver away from digital means of storing information. Our entire country's system is stored on a database electronically. If our nations most sensitive information is stored on an electronic database why can't ours?
